Visuwords

Very cool dictionary called Visuwords. Its more like how I understand and learn words than other dictionaries I've used. I highly highly recommend this as a thesaurus (or mini time killer). Other cool words to look at: pulchritude, parse, folk.

You are

You are Beautiful is an awesome little website. An attempt to counteract every other advertisement we have ever seen, You Are Beautiful is using the same medium as commercial advertisements, but their message encourages the subject to do something, not simply buy something. You Are Beautiful offers free stickers with their statement, I plan to order some soon.

Library Thing

Library Thing is a website designed to help people catalog their books. It's pretty much all I've done today. You can view your library in either virtual shelf (my favorite) or in list format. The site makes it easy to look at other lists with the same books and apparently it makes suggestions on what to read, although I haven't yet found the suggestions for me.

Their Cats Hate Us

My Cat Hates You is a long-running web site, collecting pictures of pissed off, indignant mousers with captions explaining exactly why they hate you. So funny it kept me awake for two hours past when my sleeping pill kicked in.

The Ad Generator

The Ad Generator (created by Alexis Lloyd) reassembles the words and semantic structures of real corporate slogans and pairs them with related images from Flickr to produce a constant stream of randomized advertisements.
I like the artist intention— look at the stream of slogans for a minute and then read the artist’s info page- I think she really accomplished what she intended.

Where I did not get a moped

I shot this at Vespa St. Louis with Ken and Daniel. We went in part to pick up a moped, but it wasn't meant to be. Just as well, I already have my baby.

Free Bansky Art

In a grand bugger-off to e-bay frauds Bansky is offering free artwork from his website. They suggest that prints from the downloaded images "look best when done on gloss paper using the company printer ink when everyone else is at lunch."

Mosaic Votive Holders

I made a lot of these for Christmas presents, but I kept these three. Actually I gave Daniel my favorite one (the smallest one) so I could keep looking at it. I made them with scrap glass from the Smith's old house when they moved and gems and bits of glass from around the shop.

not tupees

I think I may start collecting pictures of rugs. This one was on the floor, but I know it lived one part of it's life as a wall rug. I didn't feel right walking on it.

the Smith fish

I managed to get all three.

Greg's kitchen

Daniel's brother Greg is the executive chef at the Noble Rot, a swanky little spot. Those were some of the pots above the kitchen.

View from the kitchen/upstairs at Noble Rot. I liked the picture.

Yaquina Head Lighthouse

Yaquina Head Lighthouse

We went to the outstanding pebble beach, lookout and tidal pools of Yaquina Head Lighthouse. It really was outstanding. (Those tiny people standing next to the lighthouse are Eleni and Kieth).

The cobblestone beaches were stunning- gray with purple shells and driftwood and seals. The most amazing part was the sound the ocean made as the waves receded from the beach. Keith called it the ocean breathing. There was a sign saying no collecting of anything except driftwood, but I figured if I could find 5 pieces of trash then it would be ok to take one small cobblestone. The seals didn’t mind. They appreciated me picking up trash too.

zoobombers?!

If I told you that there are two real-life clowns in the house I'm sleeping in and that every Sunday they ride tiny bikes at speeds of up to 40 miles an hour on the highway into the city, would you believe me?

Welcome to Portland

These people are crazy about their biking. A sticker here at the house said "Welcome to Portland. Now ride your bike" I saw a pack of women in ball-gowns bicycling home after the count-down. Impressive.

New Year's Tortilla

Happy New Year every one, thanks for all the birthday greetings and congratulations. Last night we saw some cool live music: a band called 3 leg torso with an accordion, stand-up bass, fiddle, slide whistle, etc. (I'm a sucker for a good accordion) and then an 18 piece marching band called March Forth which comes with a burlesque dance troop on stilts. Really good show.

Right after midnight March Fourth started throwing stuff into the audience-- I couldn't quite see what but could make out that they were white and circular and people were grabbing them. Then I noticed one hurtling towards me- smack- right in the eye. I looked down to see what it was: a raw tortilla stamped in the middle with a blue star. Irreverent, I know, and I know a tortilla seems all soft and innocent, but let me tell you those suckers hit hard. Still it's not bad for the first story of the new year:

I got smacked in the eye with a star stamped tortilla flung by a madcap marching band within minutes of the very begining of 2007.
